Getting music for a cheerleading routine or competition can be very challenging expensive. The top squads in the national competitions usually have a professional DJ create a custom mix, using sound effects, transitions and popular songs. This can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over one thousand dollars. If you choose to do this, get samples from the DJ of their work. Also, you will want to get a clear understanding of the cost and what you will need to do (like select songs) before you start.

You can also buy cd's with performance music. These cd's have original music or popular songs that are cut and mixed (sound effects added) specifically for routines and performances. Before buying a cd, you should understand what type of music you will need as well as the length of the cuts. It is very difficult to find music that is already mixed to match your routine. You will need to take clips from cd's and record the music for your routine. This simply requires a cd burner (or cassette recorder) and some practice and stopping the recording at the right time. With a little practice, you can put together a recording that sounds ok. You can also take regular cd's and record portions of songs or just play the cd, stopping and starting at the right spot. This is the least expensive and complex approach, but it will not sound as good.

You must careful about copyright and licensing restrictions. For local events, this should not be an issue. However, any event that may be televised will require that the music is ASCAP or BMI certified. This means that the artist, songwriter and publishing company will receive the proper royalties. For more information check out their websites. Also, companies and organizations that manage the events should provide information.

The Experts Opinion: Music is a big part of any performance. It is worth the time and effort to get the best sounding music. You spend countless hours practicing so why not spend 8 hours working on the music? For national competitions, top quality music is a must and the expense is a necessity, so be sure to work this into your budget.
