Shopping for cheerleading pom pons is not necessarily a quick and easy process. You must be especially careful because many poms are custom made and can take a while for delivery. Also, the return and exchange policy may not be very flexible. Here are some thing to think about before you buy:
- What style do you want? This may depend on the age group of the cheerleaders, the coaches preference, the price and other factors. One of the more common styles has a 'baton' handle with pom material on each end.
- What are poms made of and can I make them myself? The manufacturing of poms is pretty simple, but the materials are not necessarily easy to find. The handle can be a round piece of wood, plastic or cardboard. A plastic or vinyl material is applied using staples, glue or a plastic wrap. Paper can be used for limited use poms but generally will not be good for squads and continuous use.
- How many do you need? Most companies only sell to squads, so if you are looking for poms for a child or fan, then you may not be able to find a company willing to selling just one pair.
The Experts Opinion: Pom styles do not change very often and there is no need to be on the cutting edge. The important thing is the color selection and combination. Get samples of the colors and even the particular pom you want. Make sure the colors are what you expect and that they match your uniforms. When combining colors, be sure that the colors work will together and highlight your uniform.
Also, be careful that the pom does
not interfere with performing,
stunting or training.
